2.0 fails to perform in China

Rajinikanth and Shankar’s sci-fi drama ‘2.0’ was the most expensive film ever made in India. This also was Shankar’s highest losing movie. Both Shankar and production house Lyca Productions hoped that all the losses that they made in India would make them up with China collections. Shankar felt that the film has high chances to perform staggeringly like Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ did.

‘2.0’ got released last weekend in China in more than 48,000 screens but the film has failed to show any growth. It began on a dull note on the first day and has not seen any noticeable jump on last Saturday and Sunday. In its opening day, the film took in a mere $1.28 million at the China box office and by end of the three days, it touched nearly $3 million. Early trends suggest that the film is turning out to be dud in China like Rajamoul’s “Baahubali” movies did.

‘Baahubali’ part and part 2 conquered the worldwide box-office but they had not managed to impress the Chinese audiences. The Chinese seem to prefer Hollywood visual extravaganzas than the Indian graphically-loaded movies like ‘Baahubali’ and ‘2.0’. Films like ‘Dangal’, ‘Secret Superstar’, ‘Hindi Medium’ and ‘Andhadhun’ became huge hits in China, all these are more story-driven movies.
