Rewind 2015: Hits and Misses of January

Wednesday, December 9, 2015 - 00:45

As we reach to the end of the year, Telugucinema.com rewinds the year that has gone by, the hits that brought cheers to the industry, the flops that put producers in quandary, the good and the bad, the positive and the negative.

Starting today, each month's report card will appear in detail. Let's look at how Tollywood fared at box-office in January 2015. In Jan 2015, total 15 straight Telugu films hit the screens. The year began with the release of Veera Shankar's Mana Kurralle that went unnoticed. Among the important movies in the month, Venkatesh and Pawan Kalyan starrer Gopala Gopala, Sundeep Kishan starrer Beeruva, Kalyan Ram's Pataas, Madhura Sridhar's Ladies  & Gentlemen made noise.

And the biggest hit of this month and the year's first hit is Kalyan Ram's Pataas. Produced by Kalyan Ram and directed by newcomer Anil Ravipudi, Pataas turned out to be biggest hit in Kalyan Ram's career and the year's first genuine hit.

The much-hyped multi-starrer movie Gopala Gopala, remake of Bollywood hit O My God, turned out be just an average grosser. The film collected nearly Rs 40 Cr but considering the cost of the movie it can be said that it was an average movie. Incidentally, both Venky and Pawan Kalyan had only one release this year. While Venky played the lead role in the movie, Pawan gave an extended cameo appearance.

Beeruva was a surprise success. Given the movie's low budget the movie collected decent amount and became an above average movie. For the first time, Usha Kiron Movies and Gemini Kiran had come together to produce this film. Irrespective of negative reviews (the movie indeed was below average movie as per content is concerned), the film could garner some decent figures.

Madhura Sridhar produced Ladies & Gentlemen won appreciation.
