Trivikram: Writer-director who oozes class!

Saturday, November 7, 2015 - 06:15

Trivikram celebrates his birthday today (Nov 7). The writer-director has grown leaps in the film industry. A retrospect on how he won such cult following, what sets him different from other writer-directors...

His dialogues touch the emotional chord in you. His jokes tickle your funny bone. His expressions stimulate your thinking. His 'punch's bring money to the producers. His choice of words makes us feel what a beauty our Telugu language is. Trivikram is a name that is enough to sell millions of tickets at box-office window. The writer-director is one of the established great talents in the annals of Telugu cinema history.

We have seen star writers and star directors and then there is Trivikram. What sets Trivikram apart from the great writers and directors of the past and current generation is his command over the craft of screenplay writing as well as direction and techniques. What’s noteworthy is that Trivikram is the only director who has fan clubs. Those innumerable FC handles, coupled with massive fan following on Face Book and Twitter just proves that this man is popular in his own right. He is a cult that many writers and directors look up to.

Trivikram set a new drift with his punch dialogues and sharp writing. It did not take him long to assert the fact that he can blend mass and class elements with ease. First he showcased this fact with Athadu and then came Jalsa, Julayi and Attarintiki Daaredi.

Though we have seen Mahesh Babu, Pawan Kalyan and Allu Arjun in his films repetitively, he happens to be the favorite of many top heroes in Tollywood. Even the fans of these stars love him as writer-director, such is the aura that this man exhibits.

Dialogue delivery in Tollywood saw a sea change with his very first film Swayamvaram. He carved a niche with Chirunavvutho and Nuvve Kavali. A hallmark for quality writing was established. Post this it was hits galore with Nuvvu Naku Nachchavu, Manmadhudu and Malliswari. Trivikram and Vijaybhaskar gave all-time successful films in the history of Tollywood. The duo worked together from Swayamavaram to Jai Chiranjeeva in 2005.

With Nuvve Nuvve he forayed into direction but his talent in this arena came out with the film Athadu and then there was no looking back…

He spoke at length about his struggling and his early days in our past interview…

"Actually, I came to the industry to become a director and not a writer. Initially, I tried to work with Ram Gopal Varma and some other such people, but it didn't work out right. And, I became a writer by accident... After coming from Bheemavaram, (comedian) Sunil and I used to be roommates. Sunil was the person who introduced me to the comedian Gautam Raju, to whose children I used to give private tuitions. He introduced me to T. D. V.Prasad who was making a film and said that I was a good writer and was looking for a break. In order to not let the chance pass, I agreed to it and then he gave me a chance to write the climax scene. I wrote it and showed it to him the next day, but even before they saw what I wrote, they called for an experienced director who came for story sittings. I showed my work to him, he liked it immediately and offered me to work as an assistant with him... Posani Krishnamurali gaaru was my guru under whom I worked as an assistant,” Trivikram told us.

He continued: “Regarding my journey with Vijayabhaskar.. Swayamvaram producers liked the story and were looking for a new director. Then, Ramprasad (of Chirunavvuto... fame) introduced Vijayabhaskar, as they were good friends. He agreed to direct after the first sitting ...and that moment on, we became good friends! "

His scenes are very unique and very rooted in Telugu culture. The scene when Venu talks to his uncle Chandramohan when Prema returns to home from failed love affair in Chirunavvutho is classic example of his great writing. No wonder he won five Nandi awards.

His writings brim with class and intelligence. No writer in this generation can come close to him, though they might write better 'punch dialogues' but Trivikram writings are not about 'punch’ dialogues or 'prasa'. His writing is all about emotions.
