Playwright, actor Girish Karnad passes away

Much loved contemporary writer, playwright, screenwriter, actor and movie director passed away today. He was 81. The actor was battling prolonged illness at his residence in Vittal Mallya Road, Bengaluru.

Girish Karnad is popular as an actor in South cinema and Bollywood. He was a recipient of the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India. He was also awarded the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards. 

In Telugu he has acted in the films Komaram Puli, Shankar Dada MBBS, Dharma Chakram. He has acted in several Kannada, Hindi and Tamil films.

Karnad is survived by his wife and son.
