New trend: Biggies lending name to small films

'C/o Kancharapalem' is winning critical acclaim. The public response is also very good. The film directed by newcomer Venkatesh Maha has also received rave reviews from celebrities. How did this film which was made with mere Rs 60 Lakhs with unknown faces create such huge buzz? It is because of a star like Rana presenting it. This is new trend in Tollywood.

Rana Daggubatti has come forward to encourage new talent and has taken the responsibility to release 'C/o Kancharapalem' which not many knew was even made.

Producing films is not an easy task as it involves a lot of money and prestige at stake. Gone are the days when the producers used to see good profits as star heroes dominated the single screens and theaters used to run movies for a long time and the losses were minimal. But things have drastically changed in the last ten years or so and filmmaking has become a very dangerous business and is like a lottery as you lose most of the time.

Distributors have become smart enough and are not buying films just seeing the star or producer's name attached. Several distributors have asked back the losses they have suffered with stars like Rajnikanth who had no choice but to oblige. Now, there only a few top production houses who have sustained the competition and are making films for the love of cinema.

In such a situation, what do they do make easy money apart from producing films? The trick is that the producers use all their experience and distribute films on a regular basis and this has been going on for a long time. These makers have set up their distribution houses all over the Telugu states and are eyeing good profits by releasing the films on their own.

One such man who is a master of such things is Dil Raju. Apart from making his own films, he cleverly latches on to films which have a good buzz and then distributes it on his behalf making superb money. 'Baahubali' is one such example where Dil Raju made solid money by releasing the film in certain areas.

Apart from Dil Raju, Suresh Babu and Allu Aravind have been distributing their films once in a while. But now, the trend has changed and most of the producers are distributing films which they feel have potential in them. The recent examples are films like 'Goodachari' which was released by Anil Sunkara by bagging the rights for just 4 crores. The film went on to become a good hit giving him a solid profit.

Nagarjuna bought the rights of 'Chi La Sow' and Allu Aravind released 'Paper Boy' which were finding hard to find distributors. All these makers saw god money just by releasing these films which had some stuff in them. In today's age, many different films are being made but the makers of those films do not know how to market themselves and reach the theaters.
In all this, there is a slight selfishness from the maker's side as they are the ones who give life to these small films but in turn, also made good money just by lending their name.

This culture will be the next big thing in Tollywood and has caught on in Tollywood and many actors and producers are eyeing films which they can support and even make money out of it. When making films has become tough these days, such plans of buying small films are one of the ways to survive for the producers and also give scope to small films to get a breather.

Small films made with lesser known stars are also benefiting from them as the big names would promote them well. It is a win-win situation for both.
