Roles should excite me: Rakul Preet Singh

Tuesday, April 19, 2016 - 15:15

'Sarrainodu' diva Rakul Preet Singh talks about preparing for roles, working with Boyapati and dancers like NTR and Bunny, and more.

You have acquired the image of a glam diva. How do you see that?

I don't understand how I got this tag. In V'enkatadri Express', 'Current Teega', 'Kick-2' and 'Pandaga Chesko', I did not play glam roles. Only in 'Bruce Lee', 'Nannaku Prematho' and now 'Sarrainodu', I have done such roles. It doesn't matter whether I have put on the make-up and all. What matters is the importance of my character. In 'Sarrainodu', audiences will establish a connect with my character.

What kind of preparation did you put in for this role?

I didn't do any kind of preparation in particular. I surrendered myself to Boyapati Sreenu's vision. He is a director with extra-ordinary clarity about what he wants from his actors. Be it the body language, the nuances - he takes care of everything. He would perform and show us how to do it. My character's name is Maha Lakshmi, but Bunny calls by some other name in this film. I can't reveal that name now. Maha Lakshmi is just not me. I am totally different in real life.

Why didn't you dub for your role in this film?

I had dubbed for my role in 'Nannaku Prematho', but not here because the girl is from Rajahmundry and it's not easy to get that accent for a non-Telugu person like me.

What do you look for while considering to do a role?

A role should excite me first. If it doesn't, I won't be able to do it. I shouldn't be bored during the two-three months for which I shoot for a movie.

Is it a meaty role in Sarrainodu?

Yes. Boyapati's heroines have a role to play in the story, for example Nayanatara in 'Simha'. Even Catherine, who plays an MLA, has a good role.

You have worked with Charan and Bunny. What similarities do you find in them?

They are both great dancers. They dance as if they don't have bones. I don't understand how they remember which parts to move so fast. For the stars they are, they are very humble.

What kind of films do you want to do?

I want to do full-on rom-coms like 'Ashique' and 'Jab We Met'.  I would also love to do sports-based films and action genre.  I haven't been offered female-centric films, but I want to do them.

You have been doing films with Mega family members. How did this fall in place?

It was not planned. It just happened that way. My film with Sai Dharam Tej will go on floors in the month of May.

How do you react to gossips like someone bought you a house in Hyderabad?

I don't know how such rumours are created. I bought the house from my own savings. The maximum that others can do for me is shopping.

Is your gym flourishing?

It has been going great. It's more than a gym. It's a lifestyle place. That's what is unique about my place. I bought this franchise as I liked the idea. It has been the fast-growing one when compared to other centres like Australia. About 100 members have joined already.

What are your forthcoming films?

I am joining Surendar Reddy's film with Ram Charan, it's a remake of 'Thani Oruvan'. We will go to Kashmir in May to shoot for it. Sai Dharam Tej's film will begin from May.
