Poorna: People say I look beautiful in saree

Thursday, November 24, 2016 - 16:45

Poorna is conscious of the fact that the success of 'Avunu' and 'Raju Gaari Gadhi' made people see a potential performer for horror flicks. As someone who has always gone by her instinct in picking the roles, Poorna feels her character in 'Jayammu Nischayammu Raa' will make her look like a Telugu girl. The film is releasing on 25th November.

On the director and the hero:

I would say that Shiva Raj (Kanumuri) anna is not a debutante; such is his talent. He is like a senior director. Working with him is a learning experience and I was totally at ease communicating with him whatever I felt. It was a pleasure working with Srinivas Reddy because he is a wonderful co-star. He would correct my Telugu.

On her character:

Playing Rani felt very nice because I am talkative in real life, whereas she is very calm-going. Particularly, I like the scene wherein I tell my brother the qualities I am looking for in my husband. I could relate to it.

On doing characters that connect with her:

The other day, I cried on the stage during the audio release of my Tamil movie because I got connected with the character so much. I come from an orthodox Muslim background, and I was the first one in my village to train in classical dancing, which is my passion.

Not that I don't like playing romantic roles. But I can't do the regular types. The script matters the most to me. I can't go over-glamorous on screen. In 'Seema Tapakay', I looked not-so-good to most people. The review writers gave thumbs down to my role in 'Nuvvala Nenila', saying I over-acted. I think much depends on the director. In the case of 'Jayammu Nischayammu Raa', the director would tell me that I shouldn't be Poorna, but Rani.

On the costumes:

We have a lot of personal wishes, but we can't do all of it on screen. I may personally like wearing Western dress. However, people tell me I look beautiful in saree. If the costumes are not proper, they may tell I am fat.

On doing item songs:

I did that small appearance in 'Srimanthudu' as I didn't mind doinga traditional dance number. When I first came to Hyderabad, I happened to see Mahesh Babu's huge poster. I fell in love with him then itself. I am not ready to do the regular item songs. Not that it's wrong, but I don't want to do them.
