Courier Boy Kalyan - Movie Review

What's it about?

In Europe, a doctor (Aushtosh Rana) performs unethical and illegal surgery on patients who have lost eyesight, or are amputated using stem-cells taken from pregnant ladies. For this, he gives medicines to pregnant ladies that would cause miscarriage of the baby. When the legal authorities come to know this, he escapes to India. In Hyderabad, he does it with a network of doctors in clandestine manner.

One day, their evil plan is heard by a guy and he writes about this to a social activist (Nasser) and sends it through courier. Here enters our hero, Kalyan (Nithin) who is doing the job of messenger only to see his dil ki dadkan Kavya (Yami Gautham). Now the doctor mafia pursues this Kalyan who is about to deliver a cover to the social activist. What happens then?

Analysis

Directed by debutant Prem Sai and produced by Gautham Menon, Courier Boy Kalyan seems to be inspired by the basic plotline of Hollywood thriller Premium Rush (2012) with a touch of Indian sentiment, a dash of song and romance.

To be honest, there is more focus on the romance between Nithin and Yami Gautham than the main theme of mafia of stem-cells. The movie is hardly beyond two hours but we feel we have watched a lengthy film as there are no twists, no turns, nor any exciting elements to put our eyes on the screen. It goes on straight line… so you can easily guess the destination. More like a routine daily local train/bus journey. To cover up the runtime, the writer-director has thrown in too many songs which actually play a speed-breaker to the already slow narration.

First half of the movie despite some unwarranted songs is decent but same cannot be said for the second half of the movie.

It seems like Nithin has lost interest midway – he has sleepwalked through the movie. Yami Gautham’s is typical heroine role – only there for romance. Ashutosh as villain is not effective too.  Ravi Prakash, Nasser, Surekha Vani, Satyam Rajesh, Harsh and Duvvasi Mohan have done a routine job.

Of the four songs, two music directors – Karthik and Anup have composed, two songs are just okay. Sandeep Chowta’s background score, like the movie, is pretty simple. Cinematography, editing, action stunts… all are okay, nothing to rave about.

Again it looks like the movie is shot on a shoestring budget.  

Bottomline: Courier Boy Kalyan offers hardly anything exciting – a predictable thriller told with simpler way, made with pretty common technical/production values.
