What’s it about!

Sobhan (Bellamkonda Srinivas), is a rich youth in Raptadu village in Kurnool district, who does anything for friendship. When one of his friends Rubber (Madhunandan) seeks his help in proposing Vasanthi (Sonarika), she turns out to be the same girl Sobhan had proposed when she was in tenth class. She rejected Sobhan's proposal then. Now Sobhan comes to her to make her fall for his friend. But in a twist, she falls for Sobhan now. On other hand, apart from Rubber, Sobhan's other friends Jagan and Chitti also love Vasanthi. A guy gets killed in a scuffle and blame is put on Sobhan and he goes to jail. He comes out on bail and then the story takes many turns later.

Analysis

Director Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao who is known for remaking movies has taken the script of 2012 Tamil movie ‘Sundarapandian’ starring Sasikumar which is the tale of friendship and betrayal. Bhimanani has taken crux of the story from the original movie and has adopted his own style with dose of comedy to suit the Telugu audiences.

He has focused more on romance and comedy in the entire first half. Although nothing much happens in the first half, the comedy track is funny to some extent. Some inconsistencies are there in the first half too but they don’t hinder the flow of screenplay.

Post interval, the movie gets into regular masala mode. Yet climax has some novelty. So far, we have seen movies that have glorified friends, here we see bad friends who can betray you for their own personal gains and the movie ends with 'though some of the friends are not good, friendship is not unworthy.'

The second half gets to slow pace and turns predictable and heavy. Even the bonding between friends is not established well.

What works in the movie are the foot-tapping music composed by DJ Vasantth, rich visuals, and some comedy scenes. There are also plenty of sharp dialogues that are worthy of appreciation. Unlike in the original movie, the director has included some decent comedy episodes like a “Yellow Yellow” song sequence here.

Bellamkonda Srinivas is suited to the role of rich youth guy from rustic background. He is good in delivering mass dialogues and dances. Sonarika is adequate for the role. Tamannah is highly glamorous and her song works well. The comedians Posani, Srinivas Reddy and Prudhvi have generated decent comedy. Prakash Raj and Rao Ramesh are okay. Jhansi has done commendable job.

The film boasts rich visuals, grand sets and good songs. Among the songs, “Speedunnodu”, “Rekkalatho..” and “Bachelor Babu” are foot tapping. As a director, Bhimaneni has shown his strength in the first half.

Bottom-line:

Speedunnodu is a passable commercial entertainer with proportionate dose of action, comedy and foot-tapping music. Not an exact frame to frame remake of Sundarapandian!
