Story:

In the year 1795, the British took several kingdoms in control and ruled them with the name Company. But there is one particular region called Ranakpur which did not bow down to the British. The British headed by a general called Clive kills the king of Ranakpur. But to his surprise, the kingdom's army chief Khudabaksh Jahaazi (Amitabh Bachchan) saves his daughter Safira(Fatima) and flees away. Years pass by but the British are yet to find them. Here comes a crazy thug Firangi Mallah (Aamir Khan) who joins the British in finding Khuda Baksh and Safira. Will he be successful in nabbing them or not is the summary of this film.

Analysis

"Thugs of Hindostan" starts off well as the conflict is established in an interesting manner. Amitabh's entry and his mission of finishing the British look good. Even the manner in which Aamir is introduced is nice and suits the script aptly. But once this is done, too much of time is taken to establish Aamir's character. So many unnecessary scenes are just thrown to make a certain effect on the audience.

In all this, Katrina's horrible item song comes and spoils the mood of the film. Speaking of Kat, she looks weird with all the makeup and dances cheaply. There is an uneven flow of emotions. The film looks good when Aamir finally joins Big B's gang. When you think there will be superb chemistry and great screen presence of the two great actors, nothing of that sort happens as weak scenes are written for both the stars who sleep walk through their roles.

When the film reaches interval a superb twist is generated but once again, the maker takes an unconvincing route and changes Aamir's character into a good one which lacks basic conviction and believability. This is where the film turns on its head and never gets back on its knees.

Amitabh and Aamir are made to look like fools and the Telugu dubbing does not help matters much. The fight with the British and the way the entire star cast fights them becomes so jaded that you start yawning in the theatres.

Logic is missing and there is no conviction as to how the proceedings are going to be revealed.

Money is spent like anything and in the name of action, you get lengthy action which looks good in the first half but becomes irritating later.

Visual effects wise, the film is great as the warships are designed nicely. But all the money spent, dances showcased and even the screen presence of stars doesn't help when the direction from Vijay Krishna is so bad and shoddy. He takes all the actors for a ride and showcases the story in his own way which is a full toss on audience's head.

Bottom Line: 'Thugs of Hindostan', the period thriller is a colossal disappointment and makes you feel surprised as to how a talent like Aamir even agreed to be part of this film. Though it has some nice moments in the beginning portions, post-interval the movie turns into a mess.
