Yuddham Sharanam - Movie Review

What's it about!

What's it about! Arjun (Naga Chaitanya) leads happy life with a doting family consisting of parents, two sisters. He also has a beautiful girlfriend Anjali (Lavanya). His peaceful life leads into turbulence when a politician orders a gangster Naik (Srikanth) to plant bombs in city so that the politician's scams get diverted. The gangster does as instructed. After the blast, Naik kills people who are involved in the execution. Arjun's parents happen to watch an incident that changes their life. How Arjun goes after Naik forms rest of the story.

Analysis

A youngster's family lands in trouble when they accidentally watch a criminal act and then the youngster goes on the mission to take revenge! This single line has been used widely in many movies. ‘Yuddham Sharanam’ which is written by David R Nathan who earlier has written an interesting thriller ‘Gentleman’ starring Nani in dual role has got the same formulaic line.

Not just David Nathan’s plot point is old but even the narration is quite predictable and routine. The story is opened with the bomb blast and it is revealed that Arjun's parents are missing and then it goes to reveal the happy family life he has been leading and the love story between Arjun (Naga Chaitanya) and Anjali (Lavanya). Major part of the first half is focussed on this. So, it is bearable to the some extent but post interval, it drives in quite predictable manner and it goes at snail pace.

The so-called usage of drones and 3D cameras hardly adds any interesting drive to the story. The director's inability to tell the story in an engaging way and the writer's formulaic screenplay have made it a boring affair. Very recently Sree Vishnu starrer 'Maa Abbayi' told the similar story line in similar way.

Naga Chaitanya in this role is just okay. This is not a challenging character for him at all. Lavanya Tripathi who got bad name for her performance in recently released ‘Mister’ has got another girlfriend role who doesn't do much beyond being in two songs or scenes. Srikanth, who started off his career as villain in the beginning stage, is back to playing them after a gap of two decades. As the ruthless villain, he is convincing. Murali Sharma and Ravi Varma are okay. Rao Ramesh and Revathy as Naga Chaitanya’s parents have lent beauty to the screen.

Camera work done by Niketh is major asset. The songs are not effective on the screen. Abburi Ravi’s dialogues and screenplay are mediocre. New director Krishna Murimuthu fails to impress.

Bottom-line: 'Yuddham Sharanam' has formulaic revenge theme that is told in quite predictable manner. The slow pace puts off further. Despite glossiness, it puts us into boredom in most parts.
